Is Solar Worth It for Your Home? An Honest Look for Malaysian Families (2026)

The TNB bill lands on the table, you open it, and it is bigger than last month. Again. The aircon has run since noon, and someone has already told you, “Just put solar lah.”

So is solar worth the money, or just a big spend that sounds good on paper? Here is the honest answer.

What solar actually does

The whole idea, in plain terms:

  • Flat panels sit on your roof. In the daytime, sunlight hits them and they make electricity. No noise, nothing to switch on.
  • Your house uses that free power first. Fridge, fan, aircon, rice cooker, all of it.
  • Running on sunshine instead of TNB power means your bill drops.
  • At night, the house goes back to TNB, same as always.
  • You live exactly as you do now. Nothing to switch off, no new habits.

What it costs now (and it used to cost far more)

Solar costs far less than it did five or six years ago.

  • A starter system (the Solar Mas line, two panels) starts from RM7,599. That suits a bill of about RM100 to RM300 a month.
  • A bigger standard system starts from around RM15,080.
  • Want a battery too, so the house keeps power at night and during a blackout? That starts from around RM19,050.
  • Look at how far the price has fallen. In 2023, the smallest package SOLS sold was a battery system at RM31,400 to RM47,150. In 2025, a standard system still started around RM24,600. Today the entry system is RM7,599.
  • You do not pay it all at once. Spread it: bank transfer, credit card, rent-to-own, instalments with no interest, or a loan.

How much you will save

The bigger your bill now, the more solar saves you. These come straight from our savings table, matched to how much power you use:

  • A RM200 bill could save you around RM100 to RM140 a month.
  • A RM400 bill, around RM260 to RM300 a month.
  • A RM600 bill, around RM390 to RM440 a month.
  • In the daytime you use your own solar. Extra power goes to TNB for a credit on that same month’s bill. The scheme that allows this is now called Solar ATAP. (The older “NEM” scheme ended in 2025.)

When it pays for itself

Most homes get their money back in a few years.

  • For most homes, the savings cover the cost in about 4 to 6 years.
  • After that, the panels keep saving you money. They last 25 years or more.
  • A home that is busy in the daytime pays back faster than one that sits empty until night.

When we would tell you to wait

We would rather be straight than sell you something you do not need. Solar is not right for every home yet.

  • Your bill is small. Under RM200 a month, the savings are thin and take too long to add up. Wait until you use more.
  • You are renting. The panels stay with the house, so they suit owners.
  • Your roof is old or shady. Big trees, or a roof that needs redoing soon? Sort that first.

One thing most companies will not mention

One more thing, and it has nothing to do with your bill.

  • For every home we fit with solar, we help bring power to an Orang Asli family living with no electricity. We call it 1=1. One home powered, one home lit.
  • So far we have put solar on more than 4,000 Malaysian homes, and more than 5,000 off-grid families now have power, many for the first time.
  • Your panels do the same job they would from anyone else. The difference is where the rest of your money goes.

How to find out for your own house

You do not have to guess.

  • The only honest answer comes from your own bill. Every home uses power differently.
  • Send us your last TNB bill. We will tell you the right size for your roof, your real saving, and how long before it pays for itself.
  • It is free, and it is worth RM500. No pushy salesman.
